Presumably you have already got a DS lite and you want to know what
else you need to get you downloading and start your cheap, touch screen gaming.
Unfortunately, this is where most people get put off of the whole thing
as there is an awful amount of choice in terms of booting devices. DS- X. Super Card, M3 DS Simply or R4. Even th DSTT shown on the right is not really a lot of help and most do not come with instructions. They assume that if you have found this device then you already know how to use it.
None of the equipment is free either, though a lot of it is cheaper than
buying a couple of full priced DS games from the high street store. |
One thing all cards have in common is they allow you to play NDS games (DS games downloaded from the internet for free),
some cards allow the extras of viewing movies and listening to music etc.All types either contain in-built memory or a memory card slot (micro SD is the norm), on which you will be putting your games etc. One tricky thing to be aware of is that cards with built in memory tend to measure memory in megabits, a convention set by Nintendo, while cards which accept external memory like the DSTT card, will usually measure in the more common megabytes. Which means the DSTT are better as you can load a higher amount of files on a removable MicroSD card. The DSTT is the newest and the most widely available of all the cards and come with MicroSD/USB adapters allowing you to transfer files to and from your PC. The DSTT supports the DS WiFi and rumble packs and has built in cheat code for many games. The interface for the DSTT is also very clear and easy to use, it's just a matter of dragging and dropping file from your computer onto the folders on the MicroSD card, which automatically patches and plays them.
The applications which are loaded onto the DSTT memory card is either Homebrew or Moonshell. To make it simple
Homebrew is the programming language and Moonshell is the operating system that is very basic. Games are loaded to Homebrew, video and mp3's are loaded to Moonshell do not run games via Moonshell they will not run. |
